NAD+ and NADH: The Same Molecule in Two States
NAD+ (oxidized) and NADH (reduced) are two states of the same coenzyme — nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. During cellular energy production, NAD+ accepts electrons from nutrient oxidation to become NADH. NADH then donates those electrons to the electron transport chain to regenerate NAD+ and produce ATP. The NAD+/NADH ratio is a critical indicator of cellular energy status: higher NAD+ relative to NADH indicates active, energy-producing cells. Lower NAD+/NADH (more NADH) reflects less efficient energy production.
Oral NADH supplements (often marketed for energy and cognitive function) provide the reduced form — but this isn't what's depleted with aging. The age-related decline is in total NAD+ pool size, not in the ratio of oxidized to reduced form. Supplementing NADH doesn't address the pool size depletion because NADH cannot directly restore the NAD+ pool without the full enzymatic machinery operating correctly. Injectable NAD+ through explore Tmates's anti-aging program ($149/mo) restores the oxidized form that is actually depleted — directly increasing the NAD+ available for energy production, sirtuin activation, and PARP-mediated DNA repair. See the full NAD+ injection benefits guide, NMN vs NAD+ comparison, and explore the anti-aging category for all available treatments including Sermorelin ($179/mo).
