Tretinoin + Hydroquinone: The Dermatologist Gold Standard for Melasma

The combination of tretinoin and hydroquinone — often called the Kligman formula after Dr. Albert Kligman, who developed it in the 1970s — is the most clinically effective topical protocol for melasma and severe hyperpigmentation that exists. Used together under physician supervision, the two ingredients address hyperpigmentation through complementary and synergistic mechanisms that produce better results than either alone.

For patients not using the full triple combination: using tretinoin and hydroquinone together is effective without the corticosteroid, but requires careful application timing and skin type consideration to minimize irritation.
